How to prepare for your first relocation

Home » How to prepare for your first relocation

Moving organization - April 9, 2022

It will take some time to prepare for your first relocation but it doesn’t have to be stressful at all. We can show you how to prepare and who can help you out if it starts to look like too much work (or if you are in a hurry). In an ideal world, you will know months ahead but sometimes things are not ideal and we have to speed things up. Never mind that, we have tips for this case too. All you need to do is sit back, relax and keep reading. By the end, you will be able to prepare as if you are doing this for the fifth time.

The first thing you need to do

Before you start organizing all your household items, packing, and the rest you need to prepare those household items for this relocation. We don’t mean washing and dusting by that. We are talking about decluttering. This is the very first step in this journey of yours and it will be very wise to do it. Get rid of everything you no longer need or use. Getting rid of the “junk” will make packing much easier and you won’t be bringing unnecessary stuff to your new home. You can even sell some of those things you no longer want and you can earn a little bit of money. This can be a very good thing. If you call your friends to help you – it can be done in a day or two. If you are moving with pets you need to prepare them as well.

Moving preparations

There are some things you need to do and then there are some things you can do in order to help yourself. You can download some moving apps. Those are very useful. Best of all – they are free to use. Moving apps can help you a lot and here are some examples :

  • most moving apps have reminders and alarms so you don’t forget anything
  • they can help you to find good packing material and quality moving boxes  – quality packing materials are key to safe relocation
  • some moving apps can help you to find reliable movers
  • most of them can help you with finding a good labeling system and show you some tips and tricks for packing
  • before you go shopping for packing materials check out and see what you have on you – maybe you already have some bubble wrap or such

How to pack and prepare for your first relocation?

Packing is obviously a very important part of your relocation. If you cant pack everything on your own that’s ok too. There are people who can do it for you. But you need to choose them carefully, not all movers are the same and you will need a place where you can search for the best ones. We suggest you take a look at Master Moving Guide. There you will be able to see all the great movers and take your pick. Of course, if you want to do it on your own, we have some good packing tips for you.

Packing tips for first-timers

We already told you that you should start with decluttering. That makes packing much easier. So do those moving and packing apps we suggested. Check them out. Now that you have done the preparations for packing you can start. The most fragile objects should be packed separately from the rest so do this first and be careful. If you have the option to move those breakables first do it. If you do not just add some extra packing paper or bubble wrap and that’s it. Then sort everything by room. That will make unpacking much easier. Labeling is very important too so don’t forget to label all the boxes. Even though you might think you know which box is which later on it can get confusing. If you have some items for storing make sure to make a list of everything each box contains.

Packing can even be fun (if you have enough time).

Moving day preparations

You need to prepare for your first relocation but you also need to prepare for moving day. We are not trying to frighten you but the moving day can be a bit hectic. But you can do some things to be more organized on that day and to prepare yourself. That will take away all that additional stress. Make reminders so you don’t forget the most important things like documents, keys, wallets, and such. It sounds silly now but those are the objects that people usually forget. Also, make sure to pack a separate bag that will contain all the things you might need on the road. Things like wet wipes, snacks, water, a spare set of clothes, a small towel, and such can be a game-changer so make sure to pack your moving day bag. Soon enough you will master your packing skills.

If you are hiring movers

If you plan to hire movers things will be much easier. They are the ones who do all the hard work and you get to focus on other things which is great. What we wanted to suggest is that after you are done you leave the review and describe your experience with movers you just had contact with. That will help other people. Of course, if you had a great experience you can reward a job well done by tipping your movers. That’s of course entirely up to you.

Tipping is optional but if you are happy with the service you received you should tip them.

You got this

Don’t worry, this is not as hard as you might think now. Just continue researching and finding some new tips and tricks and your first relocation will be done as if the pro did it. Good luck!
