Family relocation – what’s to know

Home » Family relocation – what’s to know

Moving organization - July 15, 2019

Moving your entire family and your entire household probably seems like a daunting and scary task. You have to find your new home, prepare your children and explain to them why this move is necessary, and deal with all the moving-related processes as well. But do not worry, we will help you turn this daunting process into a fun family event. Keep on reading to find out how to organize your family relocation with ease.

Have a family meeting

First things first, organize a family meeting. Order some pizza or cook your children’s favorite meal and start talking.  Tell your children why, where and when you have to move. Make sure to explain to them why this move is necessary and how your family will benefit from it. Encourage your children to express their feelings and ask you whatever they want about the move. Communication is the key. Moreover, tell them that you will need their help with family relocation.

Downsize and declutter

Another thing you have to keep in mind is that moving is expensive.  So, you need to explain to your children that they cannot bring every toy, book, or clothing item they possess. Because the more things you put in boxes, the more expensive your family relocation will be. What you need to do, is to give your children a few boxes and set a limit. By packing their own things they will feel like they are in charge. Moreover, they will have some sense of control.

Visit the new place together

If possible, try visiting your new home and neighborhood together with your children before you move there for good. This is helpful for two reasons. First, you and your children will see the new home and room layout. This way, they can pick their own rooms and they can pack their furniture and belongings accordingly. Moreover, by introducing them to the new place, they will lose that fear of the unknown and maybe start feeling excited. You can visit some parks, malls, their future schools, try some local food and similar. Try to do fun activities as a family, and your children will move there with ease afterward.

Hire a moving agency

Family relocation can be a stress-free event if you have some help. Doing everything by yourself will save you some money, but you will lose a lot of time, energy and nerves. So, save yourself from that trouble and hire some professionals to do the job for you, whether you are preparing for your long distance move, or moving just around the corner. They will take care of the packing and unpacking, loading the truck, relocating and shipping all the belongings and so much more. And, while they are doing that, you can focus on having fun projects with your children in order to make this family relocation a fun event.
